MDT Home Health Care Agency, Inc. SPECIMEN COLLECTION Routine Urine Specimen: Equipment: 1. Bedpan and urinal with cover 2. Graduate measure for output 3. Urine specimen bottle 4. Specimen bottle top 5. Laboratory request slips Procedure: 1. Explain to patient. 2. Assemble equipment. 3. Follow procedure for bedpan or urinal. 4. Take bedpan or urinal to bathroom. 5. Pour urine into graduate. Note: Do not pour directly from bedpan or urinal into the specimen bottle, as it may spill. 6. If patient is on output, follow the directions for measuring output. 7. Pour about 180cc of urine from graduate into specimen container. 8. Put cap on specimen bottle and label immediately. 9. Clean graduate and label immediately. 10. Send specimen bottle to office to resend to lab. 11. Leave patient comfortable and tidy. Wash hands. 24 Hour Urine Specimen: Equipment. 1. Large bottle 2. Funnel or graduate 3. Label for bottle 4. Lab slip Procedure: 1. Label bottle with patient's name. 2. Put bottle in bathroom. 3. Have patient void at 7 a.m. (Explain procedure to patient/caregiver) 4. Throw out the first voided urine after measuring. 5. Save all urine after first, until 7 a. m. following day, measuring each time and putting into large bottle. (Explain procedure to patient/caregiver) 6. Send bottle to Agency to resend to lab. 7. Clean equipment and replace. Feces Specimen: Home Health Agency Nursing Care & Procedures K-17
