MDT Home Health Care Agency, Inc. REMOVAL OF FECAL IMPACTION Purpose: To remove a hardened bulk of feces from rectum to allow patient to defecate. Equipment: 1. Disposable glove 2. Lubricant 3. Tissues Procedure: 1. Bring equipment to bedside. 2. Explain procedure to patient. 3. Screen patient, position on left side and drape as for enema. 4. Using disposable glove, lubricate index finger and insert into rectum. 5. Break up mass and remove small pieces. Note: Never insert more than one finger into rectum.
