MDT Home Health Care Agency, Inc. RETENTION ENEMA Purpose: To soften feces when patient has impaction. Equipment: 1. Rectal tube 2. Funnel 3. Mineral oil, 6 ounces (warm) 4. Graduate 5. Lubricant Procedure: 1. Gather equipment and bring to bedside. 2. Explain procedure and screen patient. 3. Position patient on left side and drape for enema. 4. Lubricate rectal tube and insert slowly into rectum. 5. Allow oil to run slowly into rectum through funnel, holding funnel about 6 inches above patient's rectum. 6. Ask patient to retain oil for as long as possible (should be for one hour). 7. Remove equipment and return to proper area. 8. Check patient frequently to see if ready for bowel movement. 9. After bowel movement, report results to nurse in charge. 10. If bowel movement does not occur, contact physician. Home Health Agency Nursing Care & Procedures K-21
