MDT Home Health Care Agency, Inc. INTERMITTENT POSITIVE PRESSURE BREATHING Purpose: To improve ventilation by increasing depth of respiration. To administer medication in mist form to assist in the removal of bronchial secretions by stimulating cough mechanism. Equipment: Oxygen source; Bennet Unit; IPPB set up; medication as ordered; tissues. Special Instructions: Unless otherwise ordered, use 5cc saline at 10-20 c.w.p. for 15 minutes. STEPS 1. Connect oxygen supply tubing to oxygen source. 2. Remove nebulizer cup and add medication or saline as ordered. 3. Adjust dilution control knob for oxygen/air mix. 4. Adjust support arm to comfortable patient level. 5. Turn nebulizer control valve until a fine mist is noted. 6. Apply mouthpiece and start pressure control at 5 cwp. 7. Gradually increase pressure to prescribed level and patient becomes accustomed to procedure. 8. Check mask pressure gauge on inspiration to be sure it is equal to the control pressure gauge. 9. Continue for prescribed time or until medication is used. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION Do not exceed capacity of nebulizer (5cc) Be sure nebulizer tube is in place. Instruct patient that his respirations trigger the machine. Increase by slowly turning pressure control to right. Encourage slow normal breathing. If unequal, check for leak in system.
