MDT Home Health Care Agency, Inc. TESTING DIABETIC URINE Purpose: The information derived from these tests is probably the principal factor on which the doctor bases his medication and other therapy. Equipment: 1. Clinitest tablets 2. Acetest tablets 3. Urine specimen 4. Water container 5. Dry white paper 6. Eye dropper 7. Test tube NOTE: ALL EQUIPMENT AVAILABLE FROM OFFICE Procedure: 1. Test for sugar: a. Explain procedure to patient and obtain fresh urine specimen. b. Take specimen to bathroom. c. Using eye dropper, extract 5 drops of urine from specimen container, and drop in test tube. d. Rinse dropper and place 10 drops of clean water in test. e. Drop one test tablet into test tube and watch for color changes. After 15 seconds, compare color with color chart and note reaction. 2. Test for acetone: a. Place white paper on counter in bathroom. b. Drop one or two drops of urine on the tablet with the medicine dropper. C. Wait 60 seconds and compare with color chart. d. Note reaction. 3. Report findings to nurse supervisor. 4. Nurse supervisor will notify physician if necessary. 5. Record on proper chart record. Home Health Agency Nursing Care & Procedures K-29
