Observe meter for readiness for blood glucose testing per manufacturer * s instructions (if meter indicates “ERROR” or non-readiness for testing, refer to manufacturer * s instructions). 10. Insert test strip per manufacturers instructions (omit if strip is placed in meter after testing). 11. Blood sample is taken from side of fingertip (i.e. capillary blood is used). Select and lance patient * s finger (give cotton ball to patient, to apply pressure to lanced site following test). Note: A new disposable lancet is used each time. 12. Place blood droplet on test strip as required by manufacturer. Amount may vary depending on meter. 13. Place test strip in meter if step # 10 was omitted. 14. Initiate meter countdown if indicated. 15. Read blood glucose results. 16. Dispose of used lancet in sharps container. 17. Clean meter if indicated per manufacturer * s instructions. If contaminated with blood, disinfect per agency Biomedical Waste policy unless contraindicated by manufacturer. 18. Dispose of latex gloves per Universal Precautions Guidelines. 19. Wash and dry Hands. 20. Instruct patient to wash hands. 21. Record results on nurse * s note and patient * s log. 22. Notify physician of any result out of normal range or per physician protocol. 23.
