BLOOD GLUCOSE MONITORING PURPOSE: • To obtain an accurate, objective blood glucose reading. • To assess patterns of glucose control that can be used to evaluate and modify the treatment for diabetic patients. • To instruct the patient/caregiver in home diabetic management, Including how to use a glucose meter. • To promote self-care in home. PROCEDURE: 1. Our nursing staff must explain the procedure to patient/caregiver. 2. Assemble the equipment at a convenient work area. 3. Instruct the patient to wash his/her hands with soap and warm water before the finger stick. Rinse and dry. 4. Press the on/off button on the meter. 5. A code will appear on the display. If the code matches the code on the test strip vial, begin testing. 6. When the word “INSERT” appears on the glucometer display screen, proceed to inserting the test strip. 7. At this time, cleanse patient * s skin with an alcohol wipe, let the area dry before obtaining the blood sample, obtain a blood sample by pressing the lancet loaded penlet against the side of the patient * s finger. Press the release button. 8. Squeeze the finger to get a large, hanging drop of blood. 9. When the word “APPLY” appears on the glucometer display screen, proceed to apply a full drop of blood on the test spot of the test strip. IMPORTANT: Blood sample should completely cover test spot on test strip. 10. Accurate results will appear in 45 seconds. *Note that Universal Precautions must be followed as per agency policy and procedure AT ALL TIMES, while monitoring patient * s blood glucose.
