MDT Home Health Care Agency, Inc. APPLYING AN EXTERNAL CATHETER Purpose: 1. To prevent the incontinent patient from soiling his bed. 2. To prevent the patient's skin from breaking down. Equipment: 1. External catheter (with drainage tubing) Procedure: 1. Assemble equipment and take to patient's bedside. 2. Screen and drape patient to insure privacy. 3. Secure external catheter around patient's penis. DO NOT fasten bag tightly. 4. Connect drainage tubing to drainage bag. Secure tubing to sheet with safety pin.
