MDT Home Health Care Agency, Inc. FOLEY CATHETER IRRIGATION Purpose: To be sure Foley catheter is free from debris or sediment. Equipment: 1. Disposable irrigation set 2. Thermometer bag 3. Irrigation solution as ordered by physician Procedure: 1. Bring equipment to bedside. 2. Explain procedure and screen patient. 3. Position patient on back and drape. 4. Lower head of bed and ask patient to move legs outward. 5. Open irrigating set and place between patient's legs. 6. Remove drainage tube from Foley and cover with thermometer bag. 7. Place Foley catheter end on sterile area. 8. Pour solution into sterile solution container. 9. Using bulb syringe into Foley drainage tube NOTE: DO NOT TOUCH TIPS OF TUBE OR CLEAN AREA OF SYRINGE! 10. Allow solution to run into bladder through Foley tubing. 11. Remove syringe and allow solution to drain out into collection container. 12. Repeat procedure. 13. Replace drainage tubing into Foley catheter tip. Remove equipment fromwork area. 14. Reposition patient in comfortable position. 15. Remove all equipment and clean it. Replace in patient's stand. NOTE: Irrigation sets are changed once daily, in a.m. RECORD: 1.
