MDT Home Health Care Agency, Inc. CLEANSING ARTIFICIAL DENTURES Equipment: 1. Emesis basin 2. Mouthwash cup 3. Toothbrush 4. Dentifrice 5. Mouthwash 6. Denture cup Procedure: 1. Assemble equipment on bedside table, pour mouthwash into mouthwash cup and dilute with an equal amount of tap water. 2. Have patient remove dentures, if able, and place in denture cup. 3. Remove dentures for patient if he is not able to. a. Cover thumb and index finger with paper wipe. b. Grasp upper dentures at front and apply slight pressure upward to release, then downward and forward to remove. c. Grasp lower denture at front and apply slight pressure to release, the upward and forward to remove. 4. Protect bed with face towel and have patient rinse mouth with mouthwash and expectorate into emesis basin. 5. Take denture cup containing dentures, toothbrush, dentifrice, mouthwash cup and emesis basin to sink. 6. Wet toothbrush, apply dentifrice and holding dentures well, rinse denture cup and place dentures in it. 7. Empty and wash emesis basin and mouthwash cup and dry with paper towel. 8. Return to bedside and allow patient to insert dentures, if able, assist as necessary. 9. When patient does not keep dentures in mouth, leave in denture cup in small amount of water and put in a safe place in bedside table. 10. Return all equipment to bedside table.
