MDT Home Health Care Agency, Inc. MOVING PATIENT UP IN BED NOTE: There are several ways of moving a patient up in bed. The patient's condition will influence the choice of method. Procedure: When patient is able to help - 1. Explain procedure to patient. 2. Lower bed. 3. Remove all pillows. 4. Have patient flex knees and press feet firmly against mattress. 5. Have patient grasps rungs at head of bed with both hands. 6. Stand facing the bed, one foot slightly ahead of the other. 7. Place one arm under patient's neck and shoulders. 8. Place your other arm under patient's thighs. 9. Help patient pull himself toward head of bed, shifting your weight from one foot to the other as the patient moves. When patient is helpless - 1. Get some assistance, use lift sheet if necessary. 2. Stand facing the bed, one foot slightly ahead of the other. 3. One attendant stands on each side of bed. 4. Each attendant places one arm under the patient's neck and shoulder; the other under the patient's thighs. 5. On signal, both move patient toward head of bed.
