MDT Home Health Care Agency, Inc. HOW TO UNDRESS A PATIENT Purpose: The attendant should recognize the patient's need for help in undressing. He should know to assist the patient with the least amount of embarrassment and discomfort. Procedure: 1. Tell the patient what is to be done. 2. Screen patient. Don't hesitate to get assistance if the patient is helpless, in extreme pain, or very heavy. 3. Unfasten belts, open zippers, unbutton buttons on outer garments. 4. To remove a dress or skirt, gather garment up to hips. 5. Have patient raise hips and draw garment up to shoulders. 6. Draw sleeve off the arm nearer you. If patient has an injured arm, remove sleeve from the uninjured arm first. 7. Gather the garment up into a roll and slip over the patient's head. Do not drag the garment across face. 8. Slip garment off other arm. 9. To remove a shirt or blouse, draw sleeve off the arm nearer to you. 10. Turn patient away from you and tuck the garment to the far side. 11. Turn patient back and remove other sleeve. 12. Cover the patient. 13. To remove trousers, have patient raise hips and push trousers toward foot of bed. 14. Pull trousers off over patient's feet. 15.
