MDT Home Health Care Agency, Inc. HOW TO USE RUBBER RINGS, DOUGHNUTS, SANDBAGS Purpose: There are several devices used to relieve pressure on an area and so promote the comfort of the patient. Other devices are used to support a part of the body and so maintain good body alignment. Equipment: 1 . Rubber ring 2. Airfoam pads 3. Sandbags 4. Doughnuts 5. Covers (usually pillowcases) Procedures: 1. Explain procedure to patient 2. Assemble equipment 3. Using a rubber ring a. Inflate ring as desired, 1/3 full. (The ring may be inflated by blowing through a straw inserted in the valve opening. b. Tighten the valve (avoid inflating ring too much, a hard rubber ring is uncomfortable). c. Test for leaks. d. Cover ring with pillowcase. e. Assist patient to raise his hips and place ring under him (the end of the spine should be in the center of the ring, be sure patient is not resting on the ring valve). f. After-care of ring: wash, dry and store slightly inflated. 4. Using doughnuts: a. Doughnuts are used to relieve pressure on small areas. b. For ring of desired sized using non-absorbent cotton, wrap ring with gauze bandage to retain its shape and add firmness. They may be made from cotton or sponge rubber. c. Place under desired area. 5. Using sandbags: a. Cover sandbags. b. Place as instructed to hold or support area in proper position. Home Health Agency Nursing Care & Procedures K-55
