MDT Home Health Care Agency, Inc. APPLICATION OF ICE BAG Purpose: The application of an ice bag is one of the most methods used to apply cold. Equipment: 1. Ice bag 2. Cover 3. Basin with ice chips Procedure: 1. Explain procedure to patient. 2. Fill ice bag half full with chips from basin. 3. Expel air from bag and close tightly. Dry outside of bag and cover. 4. Apply as needed, refill as necessary. 5. When treatment is discontinued, empty bag and leave open to dry. Record: Any undesirable effects such as redness, stiffness and/or numbness.
