MDT Home Health Care Agency, Inc. APPLICATION OF HOT WATER BOTTLE Purpose: A hot water bottle is used to apply dry heat to a local area Equipment: 1. Hot water bottle Procedure: 1. Assemble equipment and bring to room a. Test water temperature with thermometer - 120 degrees F for conscious patients - 110 degrees F for unconscious patients b. Fill bag 2/3 full and expel air from bag. c. Close tightly and cover bag. d. Apply to area; never rest the body weight directly on the bag. Observe for redness of skin. 2. Refill as necessary. 3.
