MDT Home Health Care Agency, Inc. HOW TO GIVE EARLY MORNING AND H.S. CARE (when we provide staffing to an in-patient facility) Introductory Information: Early morning care is given to refresh the patient after a night's sleep and prepare him for breakfast. This is given by the night shift personnel. H.S. care is given to refresh the patient and prepare him for sleep. This is done by the evening shift personnel. Equipment: 1. Bath basin and water 6. Toothbrush 2. Soap 7. Toothpaste, powder, mouthwash 3. Face towels 8. Curved basin 4. Bath towels 9. Back lotion (for H.S. care) 5. Washcloth 10. Clean linen as needed Procedure: Early morning care: 1. Explain the procedure to the patient. 2. Assemble equipment. 3. Screen patient, if necessary. 4. Offer bedpan or urinal. 5. Assist patient, as necessary, to brush teeth. 6. Bathe patient's face and hands with warm water. 7. Empty and clean basins; return equipment to proper places. 8. Tidy bedside stand. 9. Provide fresh drinking water. 10. Leave patient ready for breakfast. H. S. care: 1. Same as steps 1 through 5 above. 2. Lower bed (if "hi-lo" bed). 3. Turn patient on side. Turn away from you. 4. Give back rub. Back should be washed before rubbing if back needs special skin care. 5. Tighten sheets, fluff pillows and straighten bed. Make sure bed is dry. 6. Make patient as comfortable as possible, ready for sleep. 7. Siderails applied. AU patients over 65, post-operative confused, comatose and any other as directed by nurse. Methods of Reporting: 1.
