MDT Home Health Care Agency, Inc. BED BATH Purpose: 1. To cleanse the body 2. To stimulate circulation and increase the blood supply Equipment: 1. Toilet articles and enamel ware a. Bath basin b. Emesis basin c. Mouthwash cup d. Soap in a dish e. Comb and orangewood stick f. Bath powder and lotion (skin) 2. Bath towel, face towel and wash cloth 3. Bed gown 4. Clean linen as needed - hamper Procedure: 1. Bring all necessary equipment to bedside and place linen on seat of chair in order of use. 2. Screen the resident/patient and make temperature of room comfortable. 3. Offer bedpan or urinal. 4. Provide oral hygiene to patient. 5. Unfasten signal cord (if any) lower the head of the bed, unless contraindicated. 6. Remove pillow and remove pillow case, place pillow on the chair under clean linen. Pillow case can be used to hang over back of chair to hold soiled linen. 7. Beginning on opposite side of bed loosen top covers from under mattress. 8. Remove spread by folding from top to bottom in half and then fold in quarters. If soiled, put in pillow case; if not soiled fold and place over chair to reuse. 9. Top sheet, if soiled, discard. Use bath blanket to cover patient. If top sheet is clean, it can be reused for bottom sheet or draw sheet if necessary. 10. Remove patient's gown and explain procedure to patient. (Jewelry and glasses should be placed in drawer). Tell patient what you are doing. 11. Fill bath basin 2/3 full of water at approximately 105-115 degrees. 12. Bathe patient as follows: a. Face 1. Place face towel across chest. 2. Using clear water, wash round eyes. 3. Wash face, neck, and ears using soap if patient wishes. Home Health Agency Nursing Care & Procedures K-62
