MDT Home Health Care Agency, Inc. SHAVING THE FACE OF THE MALE PATIENT Purpose: To help keep up the morale and state of mind of the male patient. Equipment: 1. Electric shaver, if available 2. Basin of water, warmed to 110 to 115 degrees F 3. Shaving brush and shaving cream 4. Safety razor and blade 5. Face towel 6. Mirror 7. Tissues 8. Aftershave lotion 9. Talcum powder 10. Antiseptic pencil Procedure: 1. Place light so that no shadows fall on face. 2. Raise head of bed unless contraindicated, and explain procedure. 3. Bring equipment to bedside table. 4. Place towel under patient's chin if lather will be used. 5. Apply lather generously to the face to soften beard. 6. Hold skin taut and draw the razor smoothly over the face with firm even strokes, shaving with the grain to avoid pulling the skin. 7. Start under the sideburns and work downward over the cheeks toward the chin. 8 Work upward on the neck under the chin (don't press too hard). 9. Use short, firm strokes. 10. Keep short, careful strokes when shaving around the nose and lips. 11. After shaving is completed, rinse the face with wet face towel to remove soap. 12. Pat dry with a towel. 13. If skin is nicked, apply antiseptic pencil. 14. If patient desires, apply shaving lotion and powder to smooth skin. 15. Clean and replace equipment to it's proper place. 16.
