MDT Home Health Care Agency, Inc. HOW TO CARE FOR THE HAIR Purpose: Caring for the hair is part of the daily care of the patient. Brushing the hair stimulates circulation of the scalp, increases and distributes the natural oil of the scalp, and removes loose dandruff. NOTE: Encourage patients to comb their own hair. Equipment: 1. Comb 2. Brush 3. Towel Procedure: 1 . Assemble equipment. 2. Spread towel over the pillow. 3. Turn patient's face away from you. 4. Part the hair in the center and brush or comb it. If the hair is long or matted, comb one strand at a time; begin at ends of the hair and work upward toward the scalp; if hair is matted and tangled, hold firmly between the head and tangles to prevent pulling the scalp; alcohol or oil will help loosen snarls. 5. Arrange the hair in an attractive manner. Braid long hair. 6. Turn head to the other side and proceed as above. 7. Remove loose hairs from comb and brush and discard. 8.
