MDT Home Health Care Agency, Inc. MAKING AN UNOCCUPIED BED Equipment: 1. Two large sheets 2. Rubber draw sheet 3. Cotton draw sheet 4. Spread 5. Pillow case Procedure: 1. Take linen to bedside and place on chair, in the order in which it will be used, pillow case on bottom, spread, large sheet, cotton draw sheet, rubber sheet, large sheet, and mattress pad if necessary. 2. Turn mattress and push well up to the head of the bed. 3. Cover mattress with mattress pad. 4. Place large sheet on bed, hemmed side down, with wide hem at head of bed and narrow hem even with bottom of mattress. (If sheet is sufficiently long to be tucked under both ends of mattress, place sheet on bed with 12 inches extending beyond top mattress.) 5. Tuck upper edge under mattress securely and miter corner. 6. Tuck sheet under mattress on side. (Miter comer at foot if necessary). 7. Place rubber sheet crosswise of bed with upper edge 18 inches from the top of the mattress. 8. Place cotton draw sheet crosswise of bed with upper edge 3 inches above edge of draw sheet. Tuck draw sheet under mattress. 9. Place top sheet on bed, hem side up, with wide hem even with top of mattress. 10. Tuck sheet under foot of mattress, miter and tuck in corner. 11. Place spread on bed, upper edge even with top of mattress, tuck in bottom and miter comer. 12. Go to the opposite side of the bed and neatly fanfold each piece of linen to center separately. 13. Tuck bottom of sheet under top of mattress and miter corner. Pull sheet taut, under mattress on side. 14. Tuck rubber sheet under mattress, pulling taut first the center, then the bottom, then top. Repeat with cotton draw sheet. 15. Pull top sheet taut, tuck under foot of mattress, miter and tuck in corner. Repeat with spread. 16. put case on pillow, if too wide make an inside fold lengthwise on seam side. 17. Place pillow on bed flat with fold toward head of bed, open end away from the door. NOTE: 1. Leave patient’s room with a finished appearance. 2. Keep a blanket folded neatly at the foot to the bed. Home Health Agency Nursing Care & Procedures K-70
