MDT Home Health Care Agency, Inc. MAKING AN OCCUPIED BED Purpose: For the patient who must remain in bed the surroundings must be clean and tidy for his comfort. The bed must be free from wrinkles, linen dry and clean, and the patient made as comfortable as possible. Equipment: Clean linen as needed Procedure: 1. Bring linen as needed to bedside and place on seat of chair in order to use. 2. Unfasten signal cord, if any, and lower head of bed, if necessary, and unless contraindicated. 3. Remove pillow, unless contraindicated. Remove pillow case and place pillow on seat of chair under clean linen. Hang case on back of chair to hold soiled linen. (If pillow case is not used for soiled linen, have hamper within reach; soiled linens should not be placed on the floor.) 4. Loosen top covers from under the mattress. 5. Remove spread by folding from top to bottom in half, then side to side in quarters. If soiled, put in hamper; if to be reused, place on chair folded as directed. 6. Leave top sheet on as a drape (to give patient a complete or partial bed bath, see procedure on bathing patient in bed). Remove patient's gown. A bath blanket is preferred, top sheet can be used for a draw sheet if it is not soiled, otherwise discard in hamper. 7. Remove other pillows or devices from the bed, keeping linen within easy reach. 8. Pull mattress up to the head of the bed. 9. Have patient move to side of the bed, opposite bedside table. 10. Fanfold cotton draw sheet, rubber draw sheet, and bottom sheet separately to center of the bed. 11. Place clean bottom sheet on bed, hem side down, with center fold at center of mattress, and edge of narrow hem even with the foot of the mattress. 12. Fanfold surplus to center of bed. Tuck sheet under mattress at top, miter comer and tuck in side. 13. Pull rubber draw sheet out over clean bottom sheet and tuck under mattress. 14. Place clean cotton draw sheet, hem side down over rubber draw sheet with center fold at center of mattress, fanfold surplus to center and tuck in side. 15. Go to the opposite side of the bed. Have patient turn to clean side of bed. 16. Remove soiled cotton draw and bottom sheet and place in hamper. 17. Tighten bottom sheet, tuck under mattress at top, miter comer and tuck in side. 18. Tighten rubber draw sheet and tuck in, repeat with cotton draw sheet. 19. Assist patient to comfortable position, return to other side of bed. 20. Put clean case on pillow and place under patient's head. 21. Remove hamper from patient's room. Home Health Agency Nursing Care & Procedures K-72
