MDT Home Health Care Agency, Inc. PROCEDURE: HEPARINIZATION WITH CAP CHANGE LINE** Change once a week or each time cap is removed from central line PURPOSE: To keep air out of central line. To maintain sterility during cap change. To keep catheter end covered when no medication source is attached. SUPPLIES NEEDED; 1 sterile cap 1 sterile gauze (2 X 2 or 4 X 4) 3 alcohol wipes/swabs 2 Betadine wipes/swabs syringe/needle with prescribed cas of Heparin drawn up flat working surface .... explains procedure to patient .... wash hands .... open sterile gauze .... flush cap with Heparin flush .... place opened cap on it with protective tip removed and discarded .... open alcohol wipes/swabs .... open Betadine/wipe/swabs .... uncoil catheter .... clamp catheter .... remove and discard old cap .... clean catheter end with 2 alcohol wipes .... clean with 2 Betadine wipes .... place new cap onto catheter .... clean new cap with 1 alcohol wipe .... insert sterile needle/syringe into cap tip .... UNCLAMP .... inject Heparin slowly .... CLAMP .... remove needle and discard .... coil catheter and tape to dressing ** DO NOT BREATHE, SPEAK, OR COUGH DURING CATHETER CAP CHANGE.
